History of Lingerie: The Teddy

History of Lingerie: The Teddy
I’m going to start a new post on this blog called “ of Lingerie” where I’ll write about the of different pieces of lingerie every Wednesday. Because I don’t know very much about the teddy , I decided to start with it. The teddy was first made as a more practical garment (instead of the sexier versions we see today) that combined the panty and camisole. The first teddy was made in the early 1900s and marketed as an “envelope chemise” or “camiknickers” (pictured to the right). This piece was quite popular for the times because it was easy to wear under shorter dresses, and while women worked during World War II, it was easy to wear under pants as well. Camiknickers started losing popularity at the end of the ’40s and wasn’t seen again in the lingerie market until the ’90s when it was marketed as a “teddy” instead.
